The volume Coping with Destruction: Ukrainian Perspectives on Architecture and Urbanism during the War, edited by Anastasiia Bozhenko with Arnold Bartetzky, Anja Höfer, and Thomas Will, has been published by DOM publishers. The book was developed as a follow-up to the international workshop “Surveying the Destruction, Repairing, Reconstructing: A New Building Culture for Ukraine?”, held at Leipzig City Hall in April 2025.
The book brings together Ukrainian perspectives on the challenges of rebuilding cities during the ongoing war and on longer-term approaches to reconstruction. Through short essays and visual contributions, it addresses immediate questions of repairing damaged buildings, restoring infrastructure and providing housing for displaced people, while also considering how reconstruction can contribute to the long-term transformation of Ukrainian cities.
Among the topics discussed are the repair and rehabilitation of damaged buildings while hostilities continue; possibilities for reducing dependence on large-scale technical infrastructure through new approaches to settlement and energy; and questions surrounding Ukraine’s architectural heritage, including the potential recognition of late-Soviet residential districts as “everyday heritage”.
The volume is part of the Histories of Ukrainian Architecture programme, initiated by Berlin-based DOM publishers following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and appears as volume 162 of the Basics series.
