Greater Paris: Housing Revitalization
This presentation examines Rethink Architecture’s housing revitalization initiatives in Greater Paris, encompassing diverse typologies, periods, and urban contexts. It explores the rationale for renovation over deconstruction, emphasizing the preservation of architectural essence and the adaptive preparation of buildings and their environments for future challenges. The discussion also addresses the practical and social dimensions of maintaining resident occupancy during works, as well as sustainable solutions like rainwater reuse, climate resilience, and protection from summer heat.
Christian Horn graduated in architecture and urban planning from RWTH Aachen University. He was also awarded the French Government’s Young Urban Planners Prize in 2007. His architecture and urban planning firm, RETHINK, specializes in the rehabilitation of existing buildings, as well as urban transformation and the quality of public spaces. In its projects, the firm addresses contemporary challenges related to buildings and land use. He teaches at the **Paris La Villette School of Architecture**, where he developed a master’s-level design studio focused on the cross-border region of the Upper Rhine. These activities allow him to regularly re-examine and refine his approaches to architectural and urban design practice.
